Algae blooms and fish kills: the oxygen connection
Algae blooms cause fish kills mainly through oxygen. By day a dense bloom produces oxygen, but at night it consumes it, causing wide daily swings that can bottom out dangerously before dawn. Worse, when a bloom suddenly dies — after hot weather or treatment — bacteria decomposing it strip oxygen from the water fast, which is a leading cause of sudden summer fish kills.
A green lake in summer isn’t just unsightly — it’s a fish kill waiting for the wrong night. Algae blooms are one of the most common triggers of sudden fish losses, and almost always the mechanism is dissolved oxygen. Here’s how a bloom turns dangerous, and what to do about it.
By day a bloom makes oxygen — at night it takes it back
Algae photosynthesise, so a thriving bloom pumps oxygen into the water through the afternoon, often pushing it to super-saturation. That can look reassuring. But algae also respire around the clock, and at night, with photosynthesis switched off, a dense bloom becomes a huge oxygen consumer.
The result is a big daily swing: oxygen high by late afternoon, then falling steeply overnight to a low just before dawn. The denser the bloom, the wider and more dangerous the swing. This is the same overnight pattern described in why fish die overnight in lakes, amplified.
The real killer: the bloom crash
The most dangerous moment isn’t the bloom itself — it’s when it dies. A bloom can collapse suddenly after a hot spell, a change in weather, nutrient exhaustion, or an algaecide treatment. When it does, bacteria move in to decompose the dead algae, and that decomposition consumes oxygen fast.
A big crash can strip a lake’s oxygen to lethal levels within hours, sometimes in broad daylight, catching owners completely off guard. If you ever treat a heavy bloom chemically in warm weather without aeration running, you risk causing exactly the kill you were trying to prevent.
Some blooms are toxic too
Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can release toxins harmful to fish, dogs, livestock and people, quite apart from the oxygen effect. If you have a suspected blue-green bloom, treat the water as hazardous, keep animals and people away, and seek advice.
How to manage the risk
- Tackle the nutrients. Blooms are fed by nitrogen and phosphorus from feed, waterfowl, run-off and decaying matter. Reducing the nutrient load is the long-term fix.
- Aerate. Aeration adds oxygen, mixes the water, and helps buffer both the overnight swing and a crash. Keep it ready during bloom season — see do I need an aerator for my lake.
- Never treat blind in the heat. If you must treat a bloom, do it in cooler weather, tackle only part of the lake at a time, and have aeration on.
