How to clean the sensor (wipe-down)

Clean the sensor by lifting the station, gently wiping the sensor tip and cage with a soft, damp cloth or sponge to clear algae, silt and biofilm, then lowering it back. Don't use abrasives or solvents. Do this when the app reminds you (typically every 6–12 months) and log it to reset the reminder.
The optical dissolved-oxygen sensor has no electrolytes or membranes to replace — the only upkeep is an occasional wipe to clear fouling so readings stay accurate.
When to clean
- When the app sends a maintenance reminder (usually every 6–12 months).
- Sooner if you notice readings drifting or the sensor is visibly coated in algae or silt.
- After a heavy algae season, a quick check is worthwhile.
How to clean it
- Lift the station gently by its handle or lifting eye until the sensor cage is out of the water. There’s no need to disconnect anything.
- Wipe the sensor tip — the small optical window — with a soft, damp cloth or sponge. Clear any algae, silt or biofilm.
- Rinse the cage and clear any weed or debris caught in the vents.
- Do not use abrasive pads, brushes, solvents or detergents on the sensor window — they can damage the optical coating. Clean water and a soft cloth are all it needs.
- Lower it back into the same position and check the sensor hangs freely.
Log it to reset the reminder
Open the app, mark the maintenance as done, and the reminder resets for the next 6–12 months. Logging it also keeps a service record for your water.
Readings should look normal within a few minutes of returning the sensor to the water. If they don’t, see my sensor station has stopped sending readings.
