Where to place the sensor station and gateway

Put the sensor station in the deepest, most sheltered, weediest part of the lake (where oxygen falls first) but in open water with clear sky for the solar panel. Site the gateway high, dry and within signal range. Place any aerator near the monitored spot.
Placement matters more than the number of units. Here’s the short version — the full placement guide has the reasoning.
Sensor station
- Deepest, most sheltered, weediest area — oxygen crashes there first, so it warns you earliest.
- Away from aerators and inflows, so you read the lake’s true condition.
- In open water with clear sky above. The panel is solar, so avoid overhanging trees and the shadow of tall banks or buildings — especially to the south.
- If your ideal oxygen spot is heavily shaded, tell us — we can fit a larger panel or slow the sampling to save battery.
Gateway
- High, dry and in signal — a clubhouse, lodge or cabin with Ethernet, Wi-Fi or a 4G/LTE mobile signal.
- Off the ground and out of flood reach, ideally with a clear line toward the lake.
- If solar-powered, face the panel at the open southern sky.
Aerator (if fitted)
- Near the monitored spot (but not right on the sensor), so readings show the aerator’s effect.
- Keep the smart plug dry and within range of the gateway.
